The Zambian government has expressed deep appreciation for the 27th Chinese Military Medical Team as they conclude their year-long mission, marking another milestone in the enduring medical cooperation between Zambia and China.

Speaking at a farewell ceremony held at Arakan Barracks Banquet Hall in Lusaka, Acting Minister of Defence, Mr. Douglas Siakalima, commended the team for their dedication and expertise, which have significantly contributed to Zambia’s healthcare system.

“For six decades, Chinese medical teams have been an integral part of our health sector, providing critical medical services and knowledge exchange. The 27th team has upheld this tradition with remarkable skill and selfless service. We value this friendship and anticipate even greater collaboration in the future,” Mr. Siakalima stated.

Chinese Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Wang Shengi, highlighted the enduring partnership between the two nations, noting that since 1984, 332 Chinese military doctors have served in Zambia, providing essential healthcare and strengthening bilateral ties.

Maina Soko Medical Centre Commandant, Brigadier General Levy Muchemwa, emphasized the team’s lasting impact, particularly in training and mentoring local medical professionals.

“Their contributions have enhanced our medical capabilities, and their expertise has left an indelible mark on our healthcare system,” he remarked.

Team Leader, Colonel Dr. Wang Xiao, reflected on the team’s achievements, including performing complex surgical procedures and building strong professional relationships with Zambian colleagues.

“We are proud of the lives we have saved and the friendships we have forged. The spirit of collaboration and shared learning has been the most rewarding aspect of our mission,” he said.

Over the past year, the team of specialized medical professionals—including a cardiologist, gastroenterologist, ENT professor, neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon, general surgeon, intensive care specialist, anesthesiologist, dialysis specialist, ICU nurse, and a chef who embraced local culture—worked closely with Zambian counterparts at Maina Soko Medical Centre.

Their efforts resulted in successful life-saving procedures, including open-brain craniotomies, tumor surgeries, hip replacements, and complex abdominal surgeries.

Deployed through China’s People’s Liberation Army, the 27th Chinese Military Medical Team has reinforced the strong medical ties between Zambia and China.

Their departure marks the conclusion of yet another impactful chapter in the long-standing medical partnership, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to continued collaboration in military healthcare.
