Kitwe, Copperbelt province, Zambia.
Kitwe residents have been cautioned against purchasing cheap fish sold on the streets following a major water contamination incident that led to the temporary shutdown of water supply across the city.
Nkana Water and Sewerage Company announced the shutdown after a tailings containment failure at Sino Leach Metal Zambia Limited in Chambishi District, which released a significant volume of acidic material into the Kafue River. Reports from Riverside Bridge confirmed the severity of the pollution, with dead fish seen floating in the river. In response, some residents began collecting and selling the contaminated fish, raising serious public health concerns.
Copperbelt Province Minister Hon. Elisha Matambo has issued a stern warning, stating that individuals caught selling or distributing the tainted fish will face arrest. He urged the public to report anyone engaging in this illegal trade, emphasizing the severe health risks posed by consuming the contaminated fish.
“The government will take swift action against those endangering public health by selling polluted fish. We urge all residents to remain vigilant and cooperate by reporting such activities,” Hon. Matambo stated.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will continue providing updates as efforts to restore safe water supply progress. Meanwhile, residents are advised to exercise caution and adhere to official guidance regarding water consumption and food safety.
