Zambia and Egypt have reinforced their diplomatic and economic ties by signing a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on infrastructure development. The agreements, signed during Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema’s official visit to Egypt, underscore both nations’ commitment to advancing key infrastructure projects.

During his discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, President Hichilema emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in driving national and regional development. The signed MoUs encompass a range of transformative projects, including the construction of roads, bridges, and urban redevelopment initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and economic integration.

Transport Infrastructure: Agreements include the construction of key road networks such as the Watopa Bridge, Zambezi East–Zambezi West Bridge, and the Mutanda–Mwinilunga–Ikelenge Road.

Border and Regional Connectivity: Development of the Mpika–Kasama–Mpulungu–Mbala Road, along with critical bridges such as the Safwa, Luangwa, Bemba, and Manshya bridges. The initiative also includes border infrastructure at Zombe/Kaseshya (Tanzania) and Tapo Sikongo (Angola).

Urban Development: A separate MoU focuses on technical cooperation for urban redevelopment, targeting the modernization of towns and the establishment of sub-centres to enhance urban planning, capacity building, and investment opportunities.

These agreements mark a significant step in strengthening Zambia-Egypt relations while fostering long-term infrastructure growth that is expected to boost trade, mobility, and economic opportunities for both nations.

Under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, the New Dawn government remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships with international stakeholders to accelerate Zambia’s economic integration and enhance regional connectivity.

By engaging in collaborative initiatives with other nations, the government aims to develop robust infrastructure, improve trade facilitation, and strengthen cross-border linkages. These efforts are designed to position Zambia as a key economic hub in the region, attract foreign investment, and drive sustainable development for long-term national prosperity.
