Zambia’s cultural tourism sector is receiving renewed attention as Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney Sikumba, embarks on a strategic visit to the Nsingo Community Museum in Feni Village, Chipata. This visit signals the government’s intensified efforts to position cultural heritage as a cornerstone of tourism development and economic transformation.
The Nsingo Community Museum, established in 2017, serves as a historical and cultural beacon, preserving the rich traditions and legacy of the Ngoni people. Named in honor of Prince Nsingo, a revered warrior who led resistance against colonial forces in the 19th century, the museum offers visitors a deep dive into the Ngoni’s storied past through curated exhibits, artifacts, and genealogical records tracing leadership from the 1500s to Mpezeni IV, David Njengembaso Jere.
During his tour, Minister Sikumba underscored the untapped potential of cultural tourism in diversifying Zambia’s tourism offerings beyond its renowned wildlife and safari experiences.
“Cultural tourism is an essential pillar of our national identity and a key driver for sustainable development. The Nsingo Museum not only preserves our history but also provides economic opportunities for local communities through increased tourism,” Minister Sikumba stated.
The museum’s strategic location near Paramount Chief Mpezeni’s Ependukeni Palace enhances its appeal, offering tourists a holistic cultural experience that connects history, tradition, and contemporary Ngoni leadership.
The Minister’s visit also aligns with the broader national strategy to integrate cultural heritage into Zambia’s tourism master plan. By promoting heritage sites, the New Dawn Government aims to increase tourist footfall, stimulate local economies, and create job opportunities in the arts, crafts, and hospitality sectors.
Minister Sikumba’s commitment to boosting tourism extends beyond cultural heritage. On the same day, he held high-level discussions with Nicanor Sabula, CEO of the Kenya Association of Travel Agents (KATA), to strengthen tourism partnerships between Zambia and Kenya.
The talks focused on enhancing travel connectivity, simplifying visa regulations, and expanding tourism beyond traditional wildlife safaris. KATA Chairman Dr. Joseph Kithitu reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to promoting Zambia as a prime destination, citing improved aviation links, tourism infrastructure, and collaborative marketing efforts as key to unlocking mutual growth opportunities.
This initiative aligns with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aiming to boost intra-African tourism, cultural exchange, and economic integration.
By leveraging Zambia’s cultural heritage and strengthening regional partnerships, the New Dawn Government is laying the foundation for a thriving, diversified tourism industry that benefits both local communities and the broader economy.
