In a bid to enhance collaboration and address key issues in the education sector, the Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside Catholic schools, recognizing their significant contribution to national development.

Speaking at a high-level conference attended by Proprietors, Education Secretaries, and Managing Agencies of Catholic schools, the Minister of Education Hon. Douglas Syakalima underscored the importance of such engagements in fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and tackling challenges affecting the education sector.

With over 600 Catholic-run schools nationwide, spanning from early childhood education to tertiary levels, the Catholic Church plays a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual and moral fabric of the nation. The government acknowledges this contribution and is keen to strengthen partnerships to ensure that learners receive not only quality academic instruction but also values-driven education that promotes integrity, compassion, and responsible citizenship.

The conference provided a platform to deliberate on four critical areas affecting Catholic schools and the broader education landscape:

  1. Catholic Ethos and Management Systems in Catholic Schools – Ensuring that faith-based education remains a cornerstone in shaping well-rounded students.
  2. Teacher Recruitment and Appointment for School Managers in Grant-Aided Schools – Addressing staffing needs to maintain high teaching standards.
  3. The 2023 Zambia Education Curriculum Framework – Examining its impact on the national education system and Catholic institutions.
  4. Registration Procedures and Compliance Requirements for Schools – Ensuring that schools operate within the legal framework and meet regulatory standards.

These discussions were enriched by insights from experts from the Teaching Service Commission, the Ministry of Education’s Planning Directorate, and the Curriculum Development Directorate, strengthening collaboration between faith-based institutions and the government.

While Catholic schools have made remarkable strides in maintaining academic excellence and fostering strong community ties, challenges persist. The surge in enrollment due to the government’s free education policy has seen over two million learners return to school, creating pressure on infrastructure, teaching resources, and learning materials.

Acknowledging these realities, the government has put measures in place to expand access to education and improve learning conditions. However, officials emphasized the need for collective efforts from stakeholders, including faith-based institutions, to address the growing demands in the sector.

The New Dawn Government remains committed to working closely with Catholic schools and other stakeholders to elevate the quality of education in Zambia. With the introduction of new curriculum pathways tailored to the country’s evolving needs, Zambia aims to align its education system with international standards.

In closing, government officials expressed gratitude for the unwavering dedication of Catholic schools in shaping the future of Zambia. Their role in nurturing both academic excellence and moral values remains an invaluable asset in building a progressive and educated society.
