The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has dispelled rumors of copper and gold deposits in Lusaka’s Chunga Compound, confirming that recent excavation activities by residents are based on misinformation. Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, clarified that geological investigations conducted by the Geological Survey Department have identified the mineral present at the site as iron ore (magnetite), which is not economically viable for commercial exploitation.
The scientific assessment of the site determined that the material being unearthed does not contain copper or gold, as speculated by some community members. The deposit lacks commercial value, meaning that neither individual miners, cooperatives, nor small-scale operators would benefit from its extraction.
Minister Kabuswe urged residents to stop illegal digging activities, warning that unregulated mining could lead to land degradation, safety risks, and legal consequences. He also emphasized that the government remains committed to transparency in mineral resource management and will continue to provide accurate, science-based information to the public.
“We understand the public’s interest in mineral discoveries, but it is crucial to rely on official channels for verified information. The government remains committed to ensuring that our mineral wealth is responsibly managed for the benefit of all Zambians,” Minister Kabuswe stated.
The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development reiterates its commitment to responsible mineral exploration and development, ensuring that genuine resource opportunities are properly assessed and channeled into legal and beneficial mining activities. Citizens are encouraged to consult the ministry before engaging in any mining-related ventures to avoid unnecessary risks and financial losses.
