The Bank of Zambia has issued a stern warning to the public following a surge in incidents involving the deliberate destruction of the nation’s currency, raising alarms over respect for the legal tender and the financial cost to the country.
Since the official launch of the newly designed family of Zambian banknotes on 31 March 2025, disturbing images and videos depicting both old and new notes being cut, burned, or buried have surfaced across social media platforms. The central bank has condemned these actions as irresponsible and unlawful, reminding citizens of the serious legal consequences tied to such offences.
“Currency mutilation not only undermines the integrity of our national currency but also reflects a blatant disregard for the law,” the Bank stated. Under Section 67(1)(f) of the Bank of Zambia Act, 2022, anyone found guilty of intentionally defacing, damaging, or destroying legal tender faces imprisonment of up to ten years.
The Bank emphasized that the production of banknotes and coins involves significant costs, and they are designed to remain in circulation for extended periods. Acts of mutilation shorten their useful lifespan and place an additional financial burden on the country through more frequent currency replacement.
Authorities are urging the public to handle currency with care and report any incidents of defacement or destruction to the Bank of Zambia or the Zambia Police. Preserving the integrity of the currency is not only a matter of national pride but also essential for the smooth functioning of the economy.
The Bank reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Zambia’s financial system and called on all citizens to play their part in upholding the dignity of the national currency.
