In a bold step towards climate resilience and sustainable environmental stewardship, the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has entered into a strategic partnership with World Vision, aiming to accelerate Zambia’s fight against climate change and environmental degradation.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Dauty Chibamba announced that the collaboration is set to play a transformative role in promoting sustainable land use, enhancing climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, and reversing the alarming trend of land degradation. Currently, Zambia loses an estimated 172,000 hectares of land to degradation annually — a figure the partnership is determined to cut down to 120,000 hectares through targeted interventions.

“At the heart of this partnership is the implementation of the Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) model, a proven forest restoration technique that empowers local communities to actively conserve and rejuvenate natural resources,” Dr. Chibamba explained.

To ensure grassroots impact, more than 50 traditional leaders have already been trained in FMNR practices, with various chiefdoms enacting by-laws to protect and manage forest resources sustainably.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and World Vision outlines a comprehensive framework for action. Key areas of focus include joint resource mobilisation to secure funding for climate initiatives, extensive community capacity building, and alignment with Zambia’s national priorities — notably the National Adaptation Plan, Green Growth Strategy, and the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Dr. Chibamba emphasised that this collaboration represents more than just an agreement; it is a platform for co-creating solutions that will deliver meaningful, scalable results for communities across the nation. “By driving innovation, advancing green technologies, and opening new, inclusive economic opportunities, this partnership will ensure that our efforts benefit not just the environment, but also the livelihoods of children, families, and future generations,” he stated.

The partnership is poised to become a catalyst for sustainable development, fortifying Zambia’s commitment to building a greener, more resilient future.
