In a decisive step toward regional energy integration and economic modernization, the Government of the Republic of Zambia has unveiled the implementation phase of the transformative Zambia–Tanzania Power Interconnector Project.
This strategic venture promises to fortify Zambia’s energy landscape, catalyze industrial growth, and elevate the nation’s role as a pivotal energy transit hub in Southern and Eastern Africa.
The high-profile launch in Lusaka was presided over by Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry, standing in for Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane. He was joined by Energy Minister Hon. Makozo Chikote, senior government officials, energy sector leaders, ZESCO executives, and international development partners.
Hon. Mulenga underscored the far-reaching impact of the project, framing it as an essential pillar in Zambia’s economic strategy. “We are not merely building power lines—we are forging pathways to industrialization, trade expansion, and sustainable growth,” he declared. He emphasized that with a $292 million investment, the project embodies Zambia’s commitment to prudent fiscal stewardship and strategic development. “Every dollar invested must yield tangible benefits for our people,” he affirmed.
Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote, framed the project as a long-overdue solution to persistent power challenges. “The absence of this interconnector has constrained our ability to import power and stabilize our grid,” he noted. “Today, we begin the journey to end that limitation. Let us proceed with the urgency this project deserves.”
The Zambia–Tanzania Power Interconnector stands as more than just infrastructure; it represents an ambitious bid to integrate Zambia into the broader continental energy matrix, unlocking new trade corridors and strengthening energy resilience.
Key Advantages of the Interconnector Project:
- Energy Security Reinforced: By linking to Tanzania’s grid, Zambia secures alternative power sources, crucial during local shortages or climate-induced hydropower disruptions.
- Regional Power Market Integration: Connecting Zambia to both the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) will stimulate cross-border electricity trade and foster regional cooperation.
- Economic Diversification and Growth: Reliable energy supply is poised to invigorate Zambia’s manufacturing, mining, and agricultural sectors, spurring job creation and foreign investment.
- Climate Resilience and Sustainability: By reducing dependency on hydropower, Zambia advances its climate goals while transitioning toward a diversified and cleaner energy mix.
ZESCO’s Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Peter Chamfya, pledged the utility’s unwavering commitment to efficient project delivery. “ZESCO is prepared to execute this project with precision and accountability. Once completed, the interconnector will be a cornerstone of our national grid and regional energy exchange,” he said.
Development partners echoed these sentiments, reinforcing their support for Zambia’s energy ambitions. World Bank Country Manager Mr. Achim Fock hailed the interconnector as a regional flagship. “Access to reliable power is the bedrock of inclusive growth and poverty reduction. This project embodies our collective vision for a connected, prosperous region,” he stated.
From the European Union, Special Advisor Henrik Hololei lauded the power of global collaboration. “This initiative showcases what we can accomplish through partnership. We must press forward swiftly to realize the benefits for Zambia and its neighbors,” he urged.
The project encompasses the construction of a 330kV high-voltage transmission line extending approximately 600 kilometers from Kabwe to the Tanzanian border. With construction slated to begin later this year and completion targeted for 2027, the Zambia–Tanzania Power Interconnector is set to be a game-changer in regional energy dynamics.
Backed by the World Bank, African Development Bank, the European Union, and other financiers, this bold endeavor positions Zambia as a central conduit in Africa’s energy future—lighting the way to prosperity.
