A renewed wave of optimism is sweeping through Nsumbu and surrounding communities as the Government of the Republic of Zambia accelerates delivery of transformative infrastructure under the Lake Tanganyika Development Project (LTDP).

A high-level delegation, led by Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, and Professor Albert Malama, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, conducted a joint inspection of key developmental facilities in Nsama District. The projects include the Nsumbu Trades Training Institute, Kasaba Bay Secondary Boarding School, Nsumbu Market, and Tanganyika Radio Station—all of which are being funded through partnerships with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

During the tour, Dr. Chibamba emphasized the importance of building infrastructure that not only supports socio-economic progress but also fosters environmental sustainability.

“These projects are a reflection of our values—ensuring access, dignity, and opportunity for all Zambians while protecting our natural ecosystems,” said Dr. Chibamba.

Professor Malama noted that the infrastructure development in Nsumbu represents more than construction—it signifies the laying of a foundation for generational transformation in the Lake Tanganyika basin, home to over 156,000 residents.

“We are building futures here. These initiatives will strengthen education, improve livelihoods, and position this region for sustained growth,” he said.

Northern Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bernard Mpundu, commended the progress as a landmark in rural development, citing it as evidence of the Government’s deliberate focus on equitable regional advancement.

The tour also drew remarks from Mr. Richard Haloba, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, who applauded the integrated approach linking infrastructure to broader development and sustainability goals.

“The tangible impact on education and training is already visible. These investments are not only timely—they’re life-changing,” Haloba stated.

Nsama District Commissioner, Mr. Steward Katele, expressed gratitude to the UPND Government for putting rural priorities at the forefront and urged the contractor, China Geo Construction Company, to fast-track completion of the Nsumbu Market, currently at 98% completion but facing delays due to rising water levels.

This joint monitoring mission underscores New Dawn Government’s commitment to the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP), ensuring that resilient, inclusive infrastructure reaches every corner of Zambia—especially the rural heartlands that have long awaited such progress.
