Eastern Province livestock farmers have expressed strong support for the Government’s Animal Disease Free Compartments (ADFCs) programme, recognizing it as a strategic step towards transforming Zambia’s beef industry into a globally competitive sector.

The endorsement came during a recent tour by the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Eng. Peter Kapala, who engaged with farmers to highlight the initiative’s role in bolstering animal health protocols and facilitating access to premium international markets.

Speaking during the visit, Sarah Towers of Mayana Farms emphasized that the ADFC initiative is a timely intervention for improving disease control and ensuring Zambia meets international trade requirements. “This move will not only strengthen our capacity to manage livestock health but also position Zambia as a trusted beef exporter,” she said.

Richard Likata, Ranch Manager at Mpomwa, echoed these sentiments, noting that the assurance of disease-free zones would enhance the reputation of Zambian beef in export markets. “Confidence in our beef products is critical. With these compartments, we can meet the stringent demands of foreign buyers,” he said.

Minister Kapala reaffirmed the New Dawn Government’s ambitious targets, which include expanding the national cattle herd to 7.4 million by 2027 and commencing beef exports by December 2024. The initiative is projected to generate over US$1 billion in annual export revenue, marking a significant milestone in Zambia’s agricultural development strategy.

The ADFC programme is part of a broader effort to modernize Zambia’s livestock sector and drive economic growth through sustainable, export-oriented agriculture.
