In a significant step toward fostering regional agricultural development, Zambia and Burundi have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen collaboration in seed trade and agri-technology exchange.
This follows high-level bilateral talks held in Lusaka between Burundi’s Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, Hon. Prosper Dodiko, and Zambia’s Permanent Secretary for Technical Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. John Mulongoti.
Minister Dodiko praised Zambia for its consistent role in supporting Burundi through the export of high-quality seeds—a gesture he described as emblematic of regional solidarity and a shared vision for food security in Africa.
Zambia’s status as a key seed supplier in the region was underscored by Mr. Mulongoti, who attributed the country’s success to its favorable agro-climatic conditions, well-regulated seed industry, and capacity for high-volume production. He emphasized that Zambia’s agricultural exports are not only boosting local economies but are also making a tangible impact on food and nutrition security across the continent.
Discussions during the meeting spanned several strategic areas, including seed trade enhancement, livestock management, climate-resilient agricultural practices, and the transfer of agricultural innovations. A shared priority emerged around leveraging technical cooperation to address climate change and bolster productivity.
Highlighting Zambia’s agricultural ambitions, Mr. Mulongoti cited the country’s Presidential target to produce 10 million metric tonnes of maize, alongside 1 million metric tonnes each of wheat and soybeans annually by 2027, as part of the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Support Programme (CATSP).
The two nations concluded their discussions with a joint commitment to establish technical working groups aimed at translating policy into practice. These groups will oversee the implementation of key initiatives and facilitate continuous knowledge-sharing between the countries.
This strengthened alliance marks a forward-looking chapter in Zambia–Burundi relations, setting a precedent for transformative agricultural cooperation in the region.
