Western Province Minister Hon. Kapelwa Mbangweta (MP) has challenged both the public and private sectors to leverage local innovation and resilience as key drivers of Zambia’s future economic transformation.

Addressing a gathering at the 2025 Labour Day celebrations held at Mongu Sports Complex, Hon. Mbangweta applauded the province’s workforce for its unwavering commitment during a year marked by climate and energy challenges. He highlighted that the perseverance shown by workers across sectors had played a crucial role in sustaining productivity and supporting the nation’s development agenda.

“Your hard work has sustained the province through tough times and contributed significantly to national development,” he said, in reference to the economic strain caused by last year’s drought and energy shortages.

The celebrations were held under the national theme: “Shaping Zambia’s Future of Work Through Home-Grown Solutions for Inclusive Economic Growth.” The Minister used the occasion to advocate for a paradigm shift toward locally-driven development, with a particular focus on empowering small businesses and cooperatives in key sectors such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.

Hon. Mbangweta also outlined government efforts aimed at unlocking Zambia’s economic potential. These include strategic reforms to reduce the cost of doing business, enhance digital transformation, and improve access to affordable financing through institutions such as the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) and the enhanced Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

“We must invest in entrepreneurial skills, innovation and technology if we are to thrive in the changing world of work,” he urged.

The Minister further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting decent work, safeguarding workers rights, and enforcing zero tolerance for workplace violence and harassment.

In a show of partnership between government and labour unions, the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) expressed its support for proposed constitutional amendments, citing their potential to strengthen worker protections and democratic participation.

The event concluded with the recognition of outstanding employees from various sectors, underscoring the value of excellence and dedication in Zambia’s evolving labour landscape.
