177 WILDLIFE POLICE OFFICERS PASS OUT AT CHUNGA AS MINISTER COMMITS TO REINFORCED CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Chunga, Itezhi-Tezhi – June 3, 2025
In a landmark event for Zambia’s conservation landscape, 177 Wildlife Police Officers graduated from Chunga Wildlife Training School in Kafue National Park. Representing President Hakainde Hichilema, the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney Sikumba officiated the parade, calling it a proud moment in the country’s fight against wildlife crime and a vital step toward securing its natural resources.
“I am delighted to return to Kafue National Park, this time to grace the 28th pass-out parade of 177 Wildlife Police Officers for the 2024/2025 intake,” the Minister stated. He commended the 12 month grueling training course that has transformed the cohort, including 55 women, into elite officers, ready to serve on the frontlines of conservation. “This is a plus for the ministry as we endeavor to bridge the gender divide,” he said. The Minister emphasized that this parade is the largest in 20 years, describing it as a testament to renewed investment in Zambia’s environmental protection infrastructure.
He went on to stress the critical role the Department of National Parks and Wildlife plays in managing over 231,000 square kilometers of protected land, which provides essential ecosystem services and contributes over K300 million annually in tourism revenue. “National parks and game management areas are not just ecological treasures, but critical national assets,” he said. He also addressed the dual challenges of human wildlife conflict and illegal hunting, stating that government is actively promoting inter-agency coordination and community based initiatives to address these issues. “Through the leadership of His Excellency President Hichilema, we will ensure that more Wildlife Police Officers are recruited, trained and equipped,” the Minister added. He concluded with a message to the graduates: “Go out there and make a difference. Conduct yourselves with professionalism and uphold the duty you’ve been entrusted with.”
