President Hakainde Hichilema has urged Zambians to maintain peace and uphold national values during the mourning period of the late sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu. His remarks came during a solemn moment at Belvedere Lodge in Lusaka, where he signed the official book of condolences.

Emphasizing the significance of unity in times of grief, President Hichilema discouraged politicizing the former Head of State’s passing, warning against turning national mourning into a battleground for partisan disputes or personal attacks.

“This moment is not about division or blame. It’s about mourning with dignity,” he said. “Let us honour President Lungu’s memory by showing compassion and respect, not just to the family, but to each other.”

President Hichilema confirmed that the government has been working hand-in-hand with the Lungu family to ensure the state funeral reflects the late President’s service and status. The ongoing consultations, he explained, are meant to allow for a send-off that fosters unity, not conflict.

“This is a national process that must reflect decency and order, not confusion or hostility,” he added.

The Head of State also addressed rising tensions on social media, where inflammatory posts and politicized narratives have gained traction in recent days. He urged Zambians to avoid falling into a cycle of provocation and counter provocation.

“We can differ politically, but this is a time to pause and reflect. A leader has fallen, and the nation must stand still in respect,” he said.

“We will pick up the other things after the burial.”

President Hichilema also appealed to citizens to remember Zambia’s Christian foundation and exhibit maturity, compassion and solidarity during this critical period.

Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who led the country from 2015 to 2021, died on June 6, 2025. Preparations for his funeral are underway, with the government and family working together to ensure a peaceful and dignified farewell.
