A tragic incident in Kanyama West has left a family mourning and police hunting for a self proclaimed pastor after a 25 year old man died during a suspected spiritual healing session.
The Zambia Police Service has confirmed the death of Mr. Oscar Mwanza, a resident of Kanono Area in Kanyama West, who passed on at his home on Saturday, June 14, 2025, around 16:00 hours. The report was filed with Kanyama West Police Post at approximately 17:10 hours by the deceased’s father, Mr. Elias Mwanza, 48.
According to preliminary police findings, Oscar had been complaining of severe leg pain for the past two weeks. In response, his family sought the help of a local pastor, identified as Trust Moyo, aged between 25 and 35 and reportedly associated with Zioni Church near Yellow Shop in Kanyama Compound.
During the session, Pastor Moyo allegedly instructed the family to give the patient a mixture of eggs and Coca Cola. He then heated a stone and pressed it against Oscar’s legs as part of a ritualistic practice. Witnesses say that Oscar screamed in pain, collapsed and became unresponsive moments after the act. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, the pastor reportedly fled the house through a window and has not been seen since. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
Police officers attended the scene and transported the body to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary, where a postmortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. An inquiry file has been opened and investigations are underway.
The Zambia Police Service has since issued a stern warning to the public against the use of unverified and dangerous practices under the guise of spiritual healing. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the suspect’s location to report to the nearest police station.
