The Zambia Police Service has confirmed the arrest and detention of a Chinese national at Kanyama Police Station for allegedly obtaining money by false pretences, contrary to Section 309 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
The suspect, identified as 45 year old businessman Mr. Liang Qi, was apprehended in the early hours of Sunday, June 15, 2025, around 05:00 hours. His arrest follows a formal complaint lodged by Mr. Sun Jun, a 46 year old fellow Chinese national residing in Lusaka’s Emmasdale area.
According to the report, the complainant was defrauded of USD 55,000 on May 23, 2025, after Mr. Liang Qi allegedly posed as a legitimate gold dealer. He is accused of misleading the victim by presenting counterfeit minerals as genuine gold, resulting in a significant financial loss.
Police launched swift investigations upon receiving the complaint, culminating in the suspect’s arrest. However, authorities have confirmed that no recovery of the stolen funds has been made so far.
Mr. Liang Qi remains in custody and is expected to appear before the courts as soon as investigations continue.
The Zambia Police has reiterated its commitment to tackling fraudulent activities and urges members of the public to exercise caution when engaging in high value transactions, especially involving precious minerals.
