Senanga, Lusaka.
Pupils in Senanga District have publicly praised the New Dawn Government for championing policies that are improving the lives of children, particularly in the areas of education, legal protection and access to opportunities.
Speaking during the 2025 Day of the African Child commemoration held under the theme “Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Since 2010,” learners acknowledged the government’s efforts in making Zambia a more inclusive and child friendly nation.
Delivering a vote of thanks on behalf of her peers, Matauka Secondary School pupil, Mirriam Musiyalela, cited the school re-entry policy, the enhanced Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations to schools, and the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022 as key interventions that are enabling young people to reclaim their future.
“We thank the New Dawn Government for giving hope to children, especially girls like me. The re-entry policy gives us a second chance, while the Children’s Code Act is protecting our rights and dignity,” she said.
Western Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Simomo Akapelwa, who officiated at the event, welcomed the commendation and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to child focused development, aligned with the 8th National Development Plan.
“Through progressive policies and inclusive planning, we are laying a solid foundation for Zambia’s children to thrive. Your voices matter and we remain committed to ensuring every child’s potential is realized,” said Mr. Akapelwa.
The celebration was further marked by vibrant displays of pupil-led innovations ranging from environmental stewardship to entrepreneurial ventures and child rights campaigns. Mr. Akapelwa toured the exhibitions and described them as a powerful testament to what is possible when young people are nurtured and given a platform.
“What I’ve seen today is a reflection of what Zambia’s future looks like, bright, creative, and determined,” he remarked.
The commemoration attracted a wide range of stakeholders including school administrators, traditional leaders, civil society organizations and members of the public, all united in their call to strengthen investment in children’s rights and development.
