Lusaka, Zambia.
Zambia and China have taken a bold step forward in cultural diplomacy with the official completion and handover of the Third Overseas Peony Pavilion, located at the Levy Mwanawasa Medical Hospital along the Zambia-China Friendship Road in Lusaka.
The handover ceremony, attended by senior government officials and a high-level Chinese delegation, showcased a deepening partnership between the two nations, particularly in the areas of cultural exchange, tourism and infrastructure development.
Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney M. Sikumba, MP, described the Pavilion as more than just an architectural landmark, but a symbol of enduring friendship and mutual cultural enrichment.
“This Pavilion enhances our tourism infrastructure and embodies the spirit of Zambia-China collaboration. It will serve as a platform for intercultural dialogue, learning and family-friendly engagement,” Hon. Sikumba stated.
He also revealed future plans for projects such as a ‘Happy Land’ style cultural park, an initiative designed to expand Zambia’s tourism footprint while promoting inclusivity and cultural appreciation.
Hon. Gift Sialubalo, MP, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, praised China’s support, referencing the Pavilion and ongoing road rehabilitation projects as clear examples of impactful international cooperation.
“This partnership brings direct development to our communities. Infrastructure like the improved Chainama PHI Road and the Pavilion creates lasting benefits for local residents,” he said.
Vice Governor of Jiangxi Province, His Excellency Xia Wenyong, commended Zambia’s openness to collaboration and affirmed China’s continued support for joint development in key sectors.
“The Peony Pavilion stands as a testament to the warmth and shared aspirations between our people. We remain committed to deeper cooperation in tourism, culture, and investment,” he noted.
Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, His Excellency Han Jing, echoed this sentiment, underscoring that Zambia remains a key partner in China’s broader people-to-people engagement agenda.
“This initiative represents our dedication to strengthening bilateral ties. Projects like this are about building bridges of understanding and prosperity,” he said.
Mr. Zhang Jian, President of the Zambia Chinese Association, reiterated the Association’s role in supporting Zambia’s economic and cultural progress.
“Our continued investment in cultural and infrastructural projects is part of our vision to build a shared future based on mutual respect and collaboration,” he said.
As part of the day’s announcements, the Ministry of Tourism disclosed that Zambia’s official Tourism Investment Guide has now been translated into Chinese, a strategic move to boost inbound investment and travel from the Asian giant.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the new Pavilion, now poised to become a prominent cultural attraction and learning center in Lusaka’s expanding tourism landscape.
