Zambia Police Service has launched a full scale investigation following a shooting incident that left a 23 year old Lusaka man injured and led to the arrest of another for unlawful possession of a homemade firearm.
The incident, which occurred late on the night of June 19, 2025, along the Great North Road between Ngwenya Village and Kafue District, came to the attention of authorities after a call was made by Mr. Christopher Chindila, a healthcare worker at Kafue District Hospital. Mr. Chindila reported the admission of a patient, identified as Joseph Sikaonga, aged 23, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his right shoulder.
Initial statements from the victim indicate that the shooting was accidental. Sikaonga and his nephew, Pearson Kalengo, also 23, were returning from a leisure trip to Kafue River Motel when their Toyota Belta (registration BCC 941) broke down. During the wait, Kalengo reportedly retrieved a homemade pistol from the vehicle and accidentally discharged it while attempting to demonstrate its functionality, resulting in his uncle being shot.
Responding officers swiftly secured the weapon involved, along with one round of live ammunition and an empty cartridge, all of which are now held as part of the investigation.
Kalengo has since been taken into police custody and charged with possession of a firearm without a valid licence and unlawful discharge of a firearm. The victim remains hospitalized in a stable condition at Kafue District Hospital.
Police have opened a docket, and investigations are continuing to establish full circumstances surrounding the incident.
