The Zambia Police Service has commenced investigations into a suspected case of murder following the discovery of a deceased female in Kalingalinga Compound during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The matter was reported at approximately 05:30 hours by 55-year-old Mervis Chinsungwe, a resident of Kalingalinga, who found the naked body of an unidentified woman in the unfenced yard of her home. Police officers responded promptly to the scene and confirmed the presence of the deceased, whose body exhibited signs of possible strangulation, including hematomas around the neck.
Further investigation at the scene revealed a torn pair of underwear and a t-shirt located close to the body. The body was found lying on undisturbed sandy ground and no visible signs of struggle were observed.
Community engagement efforts led to the identification of the deceased as 31-year-old Nalishebo Sikundu, a resident of the same area. Her aunt, Annie Lungu, 53, positively identified her and confirmed that the victim had recently moved out to live independently.
The body has since been transferred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary pending a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
An inquiry file has been opened and investigations are actively ongoing. The Zambia Police Service is urging members of the public who may have relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The Police further assured the public of their continued dedication to upholding law and order while appealing for calm, vigilance, and cooperation from the community.
