The Government of Zambia has celebrated a significant milestone in its mining sector following the completion of a groundbreaking geological survey in the Southern and Copperbelt provinces.
President Hakainde Hichilema, speaking at State House, expressed optimism after receiving the survey findings from First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Chief Executive Officer Tristan Pascall.
The President hailed the results as a crucial step toward revitalizing Zambia’s mining industry and positioning the country as a global leader in copper production.
“This survey provides a foundation for informed decision-making regarding the future of mining in Zambia. We aim to establish ourselves as the partner of choice for mining companies by maintaining a stable and predictable mining and fiscal regime,” said President Hichilema.
The President underscored the importance of comprehensive analysis to unlock the full potential of the survey results.
He also emphasized the government’s focus on enhancing infrastructure and energy systems to support mining operations, ensuring that the sector remains competitive and sustainable.
As part of its ambitious vision, Zambia is targeting an annual copper production of 3 million tonnes by 2030, with long-term plans to scale this to 10 million tonnes.
To achieve this, the government is prioritizing the modernization of the mining value chain and addressing logistical challenges to streamline mineral exports.
Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, highlighted the government’s proactive measures to formalize mining activities.
Over 600 licenses have been granted to artisanal and small-scale miners in a bid to curb illegal operations and bolster the sector’s contribution to economic growth.
“Legalizing artisanal mining is a critical step in ensuring that mining activities benefit the nation. We are committed to building a transparent and inclusive mining sector,” Minister Kabuswe stated.
FQM’s Tristan Pascall expressed confidence in the survey results, describing them as a major breakthrough for Zambia’s mining industry.
“The findings confirm Zambia’s immense mineral potential, and we are committed to continuing our investments in this promising market,” said Pascall.
This geological survey marks a pivotal moment in Zambia’s journey to reclaim its position as a leading mining hub in Africa, signaling new opportunities for local and international stakeholders.
