SMART Zambia and Mulungushi University have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing collaboration in e-governance, digital literacy and homegrown innovation to propel Zambia’s digital transformation agenda.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Lusaka, SMART Zambia National Coordinator, Mr. Percy Chinyama, underscored the pivotal role of Zambia’s youth in driving the country’s digital transformation and shaping its future.
He emphasized President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to integrating digital transformation into key sectors such as education and health, ensuring equitable access to services for all citizens.
“Capacity building is crucial, especially for Gen Zs, as they are Zambia’s hope for creating competitive, homegrown digital solutions,” said Mr. Chinyama.
He highlighted that the MoU with Mulungushi University reflects a strategic step towards fostering innovation, improving public service delivery and creating job opportunities that contribute to economic growth.
Mr. Chinyama also noted SMART Zambia’s recent strides in opening government systems to private-sector partnerships and academia, particularly institutions like Mulungushi University with robust ICT departments.
This approach has fostered local participation, resulting in tangible progress in the development of digital systems tailored to Zambia’s needs.
Mulungushi University Vice-Chancellor, Ambassador Professor Royson Mukwena, welcomed the partnership, describing it as an opportunity to tackle national challenges through research, digital literacy and innovative ICT solutions.
He expressed optimism that the collaboration would catalyze digital transformation in education, healthcare, agriculture and public administration.
The three-year MoU outlines ambitious objectives, including the establishment of a Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) at Mulungushi University, the appointment of digital ambassadors, and initiatives in e-governance and digital literacy.
This partnership aligns with the New Dawn Government’s vision of reducing reliance on foreign technology by nurturing local talent and expertise.
Through these collaborative efforts, Zambia aims to strengthen its ICT sector, drive sustainable economic growth and position itself as a leader in digital innovation on the continent.
