The Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering good governance and advancing the nation’s sports development agenda.
Speaking at the 2025 Governance Forum for National Sports Federations, the Minister of Youth, Sport and Art’s, Elvis Nkandu highlighted the significance of collaboration and transparent management practices as cornerstones for elevating Zambia’s sports sector.
The forum, organized by the National Sports Council of Zambia, brought together leaders from federations, key stakeholders, and development partners to discuss governance reforms aimed at transforming the sports landscape.
The Minister praised the initiative as a critical platform for strengthening accountability and inclusivity in sports administration.
“In the past three years, Zambia’s sports sector has witnessed remarkable progress, fueled by increased budgetary allocations, stakeholder collaboration and strategic investment in infrastructure,” the Minister noted.
The government has allocated 30 million Kwacha to develop community-level sports, with the responsibility now devolved to local authorities to boost grassroots participation.
Emphasizing the importance of governance, the Minister urged sports federations to adhere to the National Sports Council Act and their respective constitutions.
“Good governance is essential for achieving sustainable progress. Without transparency and fairness, our shared vision for sports development cannot be realized,” the Minister stressed.
To ensure compliance and build capacity, the government has introduced several measures, including:
- Capacity development programs for sports administrators.
- Revision of the National Sports Council Act to address emerging challenges.
- Awareness campaigns promoting transparency and efficiency.
- Strict enforcement of governance standards, particularly in conducting fair elections within federations.
The Minister also expressed concern over instances of non-compliance and hostility within some federations, emphasizing the need for public institutions to embrace inclusivity and fairness in leadership.
As the event concluded, the Minister commended the National Sports Council of Zambia and partners like the National Olympic Committee of Zambia, the National Paralympic Committee and media organizations for their continued efforts in fostering governance excellence.
