Kabwe, Central Province, Zambia.
Central Province Minister Hon. Mwabashike Nkulukusa has lauded President Hakainde Hichilema for his decisive intervention in reviving and accelerating the completion of the Kabwe Bus Station project, an infrastructure initiative that had stalled for years due to funding challenges.
Minister Nkulukusa acknowledged the President’s leadership in facilitating the release of critical funds through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. The financial injection allowed the Kabwe Municipal Council to settle outstanding contractor obligations, enabling a renewed focus on timely completion of the long delayed project.
Initially launched in 2017 with an allocation of K17 million from both the local council and the Ministry, the construction of the ultra modern bus station faced multiple setbacks linked to inflation and rising construction costs. The President recently issued a directive mandating the local authority to ensure the project’s completion within 30 days, a move Hon. Nkulukusa said has energized the final phase of development.
“The government, under President Hichilema’s stewardship, has now invested a total of K28.3 million in this critical facility,” the Minister stated. “This infrastructure will anchor the region’s transport economy, lowering business costs, creating jobs and boosting service delivery across sectors.”
Hon. Nkulukusa emphasized that the bus station is expected to enhance regional mobility, stimulate local enterprise and connect Kabwe more efficiently to national and cross border transport networks. He further urged the local authority, including the Mayor and councillors, to ensure the facility is managed with accountability and efficiency.
“This is not just a structure it is a strategic public asset,” he said. “We call on the public to safeguard this investment and help maintain it for the benefit of future generations.”
The completion of the Kabwe Bus Station marks a significant step in Zambia’s broader infrastructure agenda, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving urban services and fostering sustainable economic growth through strategic capital projects.
