Mongu’s Lewanika General Hospital has taken a major step forward in surgical care with the introduction of a cutting-edge C-arm X-ray machine, courtesy of the Czech Republic. This milestone marks a significant advancement in orthopaedic treatment capabilities in Western Province.
During the official handover ceremony, Czech Republic Ambassador to Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Pavel Procházka, underscored the longstanding partnership between his country and Lewanika General Hospital.
“Our collaboration dates back to 2013, and this latest initiative addresses a critical need in surgical imaging. With the hospital facing challenges in conducting complex procedures, our joint efforts have made it possible to equip the theatre with this essential technology. This machine will enhance precision in surgery and benefit Zambian patients for years to come,” Ambassador Procházka stated.
Western Province Minister, Hon. Kapelwa Mbangweta (MP), received the donation on behalf of the government, expressing profound gratitude for the Czech Republic’s continued support. He highlighted the machine’s role in expanding healthcare services and reducing the burden of referrals to distant facilities.
“This state-of-the-art equipment will enable Lewanika General Hospital to conduct specialized orthopaedic surgeries locally, improving patient care while significantly cutting referral costs,” Minister Mbangweta noted.
Western Province Acting Provincial Health Director, Dr. Loveday Mwila, echoed similar sentiments, describing the donation as a symbol of international solidarity and commitment to advancing healthcare in the region.
In addition to the equipment, a team of Czech medical professionals—including orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, and nurses—is in Mongu to provide specialized surgical services free of charge for a week, ensuring immediate benefits to patients in need.
The installation of the C-arm X-ray machine marks a transformative step for Lewanika General Hospital, promising enhanced surgical accuracy and better patient outcomes for years to come.
