In a significant move to enhance maternal healthcare services, the Government, through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), has extended vital support to Mpongwe Baptist Mission Hospital in Copperbelt Province. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery and promote the well-being of communities, especially expectant mothers.

During a handover ceremony graced by Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Mwanza, a substantial consignment of medical supplies and essential materials was presented to the hospital. Accompanied by Mpongwe District Commissioner Mr. Burton Mukomba, Council Chairperson Mr. Emmanuel Masanga, and DMMU Regional Coordinator Mr. George Kalamwa, Mr. Mwanza underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening maternal and child health services in rural communities.

The donation package included maternity kits, blankets, and bedding specifically intended for expectant mothers, to ensure safer deliveries and enhance patient comfort. In addition, the hospital received iron sheets to support infrastructure improvements, as well as gloves, mattresses, and water purifiers — critical items that will improve both the hygiene standards and general care environment within the facility.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mwanza emphasized that the donation goes beyond meeting immediate needs. “This gesture reflects our dedication to safeguarding the dignity and health of our mothers. Every expectant mother deserves access to quality care in a safe, clean, and supportive environment,” he said.

The materials provided are expected to not only improve the hospital’s capacity to deliver essential maternity services but also to uplift the overall standard of healthcare in the district. The iron sheets, in particular, will aid in roofing improvements, ensuring better protection for both patients and medical staff against weather elements.

Hospital representatives expressed profound gratitude for the timely intervention, noting that the items will play a crucial role in enhancing service delivery and patient outcomes.

This donation is part of the New Dawn Government’s broader agenda to fortify healthcare infrastructure in underserved areas, contributing to national efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.
