ELDERLY MAN FOUND DEAD IN KANYAMA, POLICE LAUNCH INQUIRY INTO SUDDEN DEATH

Kanyama Police have launched an inquiry into the sudden and unnatural death of a 60 year old man who was found lifeless in his home in the Mutandabantu area of Kanyama Compound, Lusaka.

The report was made around 09:00 hours on Sunday, June 15, 2025, by Ms. Priscilla Phiri, 37, a concerned resident of the area. According to police, the deceased, identified as Jackson Phiri, was a well known cigarette vendor who lived alone and reportedly had no known family members.

Mr. Phiri is said to have been complaining of chest pains in the days preceding his death. On the morning of June 15, a customer who had come to buy cigarettes found him unresponsive and immediately raised alarms within the community.

Police officers quickly responded to the scene and with the help of local residents, transported the body to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary. The exact time of death is currently unknown, but authorities believe it occurred sometime between Saturday, June 14 and early Sunday morning.

The body has since been deposited at UTH pending a postmortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. An official inquiry has been opened and investigations are ongoing.

The Zambia Police Service urges members of the public to continue reporting any suspicious or unusual deaths and reminds communities to check on vulnerable individuals, particularly those living alone.
