GOVERNMENT APPEALS TO CHIEFS TO FACILITATE LAND FOR SOLAR ENERGY PROJECTS

The Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote, has underscored the critical role of traditional leadership in unlocking Zambia’s renewable energy potential, urging chiefs across the country to facilitate land access for solar power development in their respective chiefdoms.

Speaking during a press briefing, Mr. Chikote highlighted that solar energy investments represent not only a sustainable solution to Zambia’s electricity deficit but also a powerful catalyst for rural transformation and economic diversification.

“Access to clean energy is fundamental to achieving inclusive growth and our traditional leaders are uniquely positioned to drive this agenda forward by availing land for solar projects,” Mr. Chikote stated. “These developments will power our communities, create local jobs and spur new opportunities for enterprise and infrastructure.”

The Minister reiterated that the New Dawn Government’s broader national energy strategy prioritizes the expansion of renewable energy as a means of strengthening energy security, boosting local economies and creating employment particularly for the youth and rural populations.

He noted that Zambia’s ambitious target to add 1,000 megawatts to the national grid by the end of 2025, as directed by President Hakainde Hichilema, will require concerted action from the government, the private sector and traditional authorities.

“Our progress depends on partnerships. By working hand in hand with traditional leaders, we can ensure that communities are not only hosts to these projects but also beneficiaries of the opportunities they bring,” said Mr. Chikote.

He also emphasized the government’s continued commitment to fostering a conducive environment for private sector-led renewable energy investments across all provinces, with a focus on ensuring that benefits flow directly to host communities.

The Minister concluded by calling on all stakeholders to embrace Zambia’s renewable energy transition as a national development priority and to seize the opportunity to reshape the country’s energy landscape towards a more sustainable and inclusive future.
