The Acting Minister of Health, Hon. Frank Tayali, has called on all Zambians to take an active role in combating cancer, a disease that continues to claim thousands of lives annually.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka to launch the World Cancer Awareness Week, Hon. Tayali highlighted the critical need for collective action ahead of World Cancer Day, which will be commemorated on 4th February 2025.
Hon. Tayali revealed sobering statistics, noting that Zambia records over 15,000 new cancer cases every year, with approximately 9,000 lives lost to the disease annually.
He emphasized that the cancer burden affects individuals, families and the nation’s development, making it a priority area for government intervention.
The Acting Minister outlined the New Dawn Government’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by cancer.
Through the Ministry of Health, several measures have been implemented to reduce the prevalence of the disease and improve patient outcomes.
Key interventions include:
(1). Nationwide efforts to educate the public about cancer prevention, risk factors, and early detection.
(2). Enhanced access to cancer screening services to facilitate early diagnosis and timely treatment.
(3) Strengthening support systems for patients and families affected by cancer, including counseling and palliative care.
Hon. Tayali reiterated the importance of early detection, which significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. He urged individuals to utilize available screening services and to adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce the risk of developing cancer.
World Cancer Day, observed annually on 4th February, serves as a global platform to raise awareness, educate communities and inspire action in the fight against cancer.
This year’s theme, “United by Unique,” emphasizes the need for a united forward in tackling the disease while recognizing the unique role each individual and organization plays in the battle against cancer.
Hon. Tayali concluded by appealing to all Zambians, civil society organizations, and the private sector to collaborate with the government in scaling up cancer prevention and control initiatives. He stressed that a united effort can significantly reduce the impact of cancer and save countless lives.
World Cancer Day 2025 promises to be a pivotal moment for Zambia to reaffirm its commitment to the fight against cancer and to honor the lives of those affected by this disease.
