The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts continues to demonstrate its commitment to youth empowerment and entrepreneurship, with the official handover of two motorbikes to the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) on 18th March 2025.
Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the Ministerial Conference Room, the Honorable Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Mr. Elvis Nkandu, MP, underscored the government’s determination to address the socio-economic challenges faced by students. Recognizing the financial pressures that often burden students from low-income backgrounds, the Minister praised UNZASU’s proactive approach in seeking sustainable solutions, rather than relying on financial handouts.
“The request for support was not for direct monetary assistance, but for tools that would enable self-sufficiency,” the Minister highlighted. “This shows vision, innovation, and a spirit of resilience that aligns with the government’s youth empowerment agenda.”
The two motorbikes are intended to facilitate income-generating activities for the student body, with ventures such as delivery services expected to create employment opportunities both within the university and in the surrounding communities. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to promote entrepreneurship and reduce youth unemployment.
Hon. Nkandu further commended the leadership of UNZASU for their forward-thinking approach, emphasizing that such initiatives are key to building a self-reliant and entrepreneurial student community. He encouraged the union to collaborate with the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises Development to explore additional financing avenues that could further scale up their business initiatives.
“This donation is more than the provision of transport equipment — it is a catalyst for youth-led enterprise and a testament to the UPND government’s resolve to invest in practical, impactful solutions,” the Minister stated.
In closing, the Minister challenged all student unions across the country to adopt similar innovative approaches that not only meet immediate needs but also create long-term opportunities for their members.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, members of the UNZASU executive, and representatives of the press, marking yet another milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to empower the young people of Zambia through entrepreneurship and innovation.
