Mufumbwe, Zambia
In a significant step toward formalizing and empowering small-scale mining operations, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, led a delegation to Kikonge Gold Mine in Mufumbwe District, where he officially launched the formalization of artisanal mining activities.
The initiative, spearheaded by the New Dawn Government, is part of a broader strategy to integrate artisanal and small-scale miners into the formal economy, thereby enhancing safety, increasing revenue collection and boosting community development.
Hon. Kabuswe was accompanied by North-Western Province Minister, Hon. Robert Lihefu. The two leaders began their visit with a courtesy call on His Royal Highness Chief Kizela Mukumbi to seek traditional blessings and support for the initiative.
The formalization of artisanal mining at Kikonge is expected to benefit residents of Mufumbwe and Kasempa Districts, providing them with regulated access to gold resources, job opportunities and increased economic participation.
“This programme is about putting wealth in the hands of our people while ensuring that mining is done in a safe, legal and sustainable manner,” said Minister Kabuswe during the visit.
The government continues to roll out similar programmes across the country in a bid to unlock the potential of Zambia’s vast mineral wealth while ensuring that local communities benefit meaningfully from the country’s natural resources.
