Zambia has taken another bold step towards environmental sustainability and a circular economy with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art waste recycling plant by the Nvumabaranda Group of Companies in Kalumbila District. The launch, officiated by the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, aligns with the country’s vision under the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP) to promote green growth, resource efficiency, and climate change mitigation.
In his address, the Minister of Green Economy and Environment emphasized that recycling is not only a tool for reducing pollution but also a catalyst for job creation, resource conservation, and sustainable industrial development. The new facility features modern equipment — including waste crushers, pelletizers, egg tray manufacturing units, and livestock feed production machines — positioning it as a key driver in reducing landfill waste and lowering carbon emissions.
Kalumbila District Commissioner, Ms. Brenda Sankisa, applauded the milestone, describing it as a transformative development that will contribute significantly to environmental preservation and community welfare. Kalumbila Council Chairperson, Mr. Shadreck Munjunge, encouraged residents to support the initiative and leverage waste recycling as a source of income.
First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Trident Representative, Mr. Sapalo, highlighted the company’s fruitful collaboration with Nvumabaranda, sharing that in 2023 alone, they recycled 130 tonnes of empty chemical bags and 30 tonnes of plastic waste. He called on citizens to recognize the economic potential that lies in mining-related waste.
Chief Executive Officer of Nvumabaranda Group of Companies, Mr. Kennedy Induna, expressed gratitude to the local community, Kalumbila Town Council, and key mining partners — Barrick Mines, Kansanshi Mines, and Kalumbila Mines — for their unwavering support. He announced that the newly commissioned K16 million facility represents the first phase of a larger investment, with a K50 million second phase on the horizon, the company has also employed 300 workers.
Demonstrating the company’s commitment to community welfare, Mr. Induna donated 150 trays of eggs from Nvumabaranda Farms to the Provincial Health Office to support local health facilities. He also reaffirmed the company’s ongoing support for vulnerable groups and hospitals in the region.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by North Western Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Grangson Katambi, and senior officials from the UPND, led by Provincial Chairman, Mr. Sapezo.
The New Dawn Government, under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, remains committed to fostering private-sector-driven solutions that promote environmental stewardship, reduce landfill waste, and advance Zambia’s climate action objectives.
