In response to the acid spillage in Mwambashi and Kafue Rivers, the Government of Zambia through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has launched an independent investigation to assess the environmental damage and establish preventive measures. This decisive action highlights the government’s commitment to environmental protection, regulatory enforcement, and corporate accountability.

The spill, which occurred on 18th February 2025, has raised concerns about water contamination, ecological damage, and socio-economic repercussions for affected communities.

The investigation will focus on:

  1. Assessing the extent of water and ecosystem contamination
  2. Evaluating the impact on local communities, agriculture, and businesses
  3. Examining the structural integrity of tailing dams and storage facilities
  4. Developing recommendations to prevent future incidents

Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Mposha, MP, assured the public that the government is holding Sino Metals Leach Zambia Limited accountable for the spill, which has led to crop damage, disrupted livelihoods, and potential health risks in Chambishi, Kalulushi, and Kitwe.

“The environmental and socio-economic consequences of this spill are deeply concerning. We will ensure that responsible parties are held accountable while implementing long-term measures to protect our environment and communities,” Minister Mposha stated.

Hon. Mposha reaffirmed that the compliance order issued to Sino Metals on 21st February 2025 remains in force and will only be lifted once scientific evidence confirms the absence of hazardous pollutants.

Additionally, he directed the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to accelerate its environmental assessment efforts, working with key stakeholders to mitigate the impact and enforce regulations.

“The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates on the investigation’s progress. Our priority is to ensure public safety, environmental restoration, and strict adherence to environmental policies,” he added.

The incident has reignited discussions on the need for stricter environmental regulations and compliance monitoring within the mining sector.

The government is urging all mining companies to:

  1. Strengthen safety measures for hazardous material storage
  2. Adopt best practices for environmental risk management
  3. Ensure compliance with national and international environmental laws

“This incident serves as a wake-up call. Protecting our natural resources is a national priority, and we will not compromise on environmental integrity,” Minister Mposha emphasized.

The findings of the independent investigation will inform policy reforms and regulatory enhancements, reinforcing Zambia’s commitment to sustainable environmental management and industrial responsibility.
