The Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector, revealing that over 194,000 farmers in Eastern Province have benefitted from the Farmers Input Support Programme (FISP).

This milestone underscores the government’s continued efforts to bolster food security and enhance livelihoods, particularly in rural communities where agriculture remains the primary economic driver.

Speaking on behalf of the Eastern Province Minister, Hon. Peter Phiri, Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr. Lewis Mwape highlighted the pivotal role agriculture plays in the region’s socio economic development. He stressed that government interventions like FISP are not only vital for boosting production but also central to reducing poverty and combating household hunger.

“Agriculture forms the backbone of Eastern Province’s economy. As a government, we are fully committed to ensuring that this sector thrives, as it is key to improving the well being of our citizens,” Dr. Mwape said.

He further reiterated the New Dawn Administration’s dedication to supporting both vulnerable and productive farmers, noting that the government’s ultimate vision is to empower households to achieve self sufficiency and improved living standards.

The government has pledged to continue enhancing support mechanisms for farmers, ensuring timely delivery of inputs and expanding access to agricultural services, in line with national development goals.

This commitment aligns with the New Dawn Government’s broader agenda of achieving national food security, fostering economic resilience and promoting inclusive growth.

By empowering smallholder farmers through initiatives like FISP, the government aims to transform the agricultural sector into a sustainable engine for job creation, poverty reduction and rural development, ensuring no household is left behind in the journey toward national prosperity.
