In response to the growing concerns over potential flooding in Eastern Province, the Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property. Authorities are implementing proactive measures to mitigate disaster risks while simultaneously promoting economic opportunities in the region.

Eastern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Dr. Lewis Mwape, highlighted the government’s vigilance in monitoring weather patterns and ensuring timely intervention should severe floods occur. He stressed the importance of community awareness, urging residents to recognize early warning signs and take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage.

Beyond immediate flood preparedness, Dr. Mwape encouraged local farmers to maximize available water resources through harvesting techniques, ensuring sustainability during the dry season. He also advised early harvesting of legume crops and strategic fodder preservation for livestock, emphasizing resilience in agricultural practices.

In a broader economic context, Dr. Mwape called on investors to capitalize on the province’s growing hospitality sector. He noted that the recent Nc’wala Ceremony had significantly boosted commerce and trade, underscoring the demand for accommodation and related services.

“This year’s Nc’wala Ceremony was an exceptional success, demonstrating the vast potential of cultural tourism as an economic driver,” Dr. Mwape stated. “I urge the private sector to seize the opportunity and invest in the hospitality infrastructure to support the increasing influx of visitors and traders.”

With a dual focus on disaster preparedness and economic expansion, the government remains steadfast in fostering resilience and prosperity in Eastern Province.
