The Zambia Police Service has launched an intensive investigation into a suspected case of human trafficking involving foreign nationals, following a report filed at Kanyama Police Station.

On 14th May, 2025, at approximately 15:00 hours, an 18 year old female of Malawian nationality, originally from Malembo Village in Lilongwe District, reported that she had been trafficked into Zambia by a fellow Malawian, identified as Paul Phiri, aged 25, currently residing in John Laing Compound, Lusaka.

According to preliminary findings, the incident dates back to 18th August, 2024, when the victim, a school leaver awaiting her Form 4 examination results, was lured by the suspect with false promises of employment as a domestic worker in Zambia. Upon her arrival, however, the suspect reportedly seized her phone, subjected her to repeated sexual abuse resulting in a five month pregnancy and later denied her basic needs before evicting her from his residence.

During a police follow-up operation at the suspect’s residence, officers discovered a second victim, a 25 year old Malawian national from Shamama Village, Kasungu District. She disclosed that she had been deceived through social media by the suspect, who falsely promised marriage, leading her to travel to Zambia.

The suspect is currently in custody at Kanyama Police Station and a docket of human trafficking has been opened in accordance with Zambian law. Both victims are now receiving appropriate care and protection, with arrangements being made to relocate them to a secure facility as part of the established victim support protocols.

The Zambia Police Service strongly condemns all forms of human trafficking and exploitation. The Service urges the public, particularly young women, to exercise vigilance against fraudulent offers of employment or marriage especially those made through online platforms or cross-border contacts.

The Police further appeal to anyone with information related to this case or similar incidents to come forward and report to the nearest police station to aid in ongoing investigations.
