Lusaka, Zambia.

In a high-stakes operation at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, Zambian authorities have intercepted an Indian national attempting to smuggle millions in cash and suspected gold out of the country, in what is being described as one of the most significant seizures at the airport in recent years.

Aamir Soeb Patel, a 27-year-old foreign national, was arrested on Friday, 18th April 2025, during a coordinated sweep by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in collaboration with other State Security Agencies. Patel was found in possession of a staggering USD 2.32 million in cash along with seven pieces of suspected gold, estimated to be worth an additional USD 500,000. The contraband was reportedly being smuggled to Dubai.

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, which they believe may be linked to a larger transnational organized crime syndicate operating in the region.

While investigations are ongoing, the DEC has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on criminal networks exploiting Zambian borders for illicit financial flows. In a public statement, the Commission urged citizens to reject participation in illegal activities and to remain vigilant by reporting any suspicious behavior.

“This interception sends a clear message: Zambia will not be used as a conduit for financial crime,” the Commission stated. “The long arm of the law remains firm and unwavering.”

The operation underscores the increasing sophistication and vigilance of Zambian security forces in combating international crime, particularly at key transit hubs such as KKIA. More updates are expected as the case develops.
