KK DAY MARATHON LAUNCHED WITH RENEWED FOCUS ON HEALTH, TOURISM, AND NATIONAL UNITY

The Ministry of Tourism has officially launched the 2025 Kenneth Kaunda Day Marathon, a flagship event that not only pays homage to Zambia’s founding President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, but also serves as a powerful vehicle for promoting national health, unity, and tourism.

Addressing attendees at the launch, Honourable Rodney Sikumba, Minister of Tourism, commended Professional Insurance Corporation Zambia (PICZ) for their generous K1.5 million sponsorship—underscoring their role as a longstanding pillar of support since the inception of the marathon.

Minister Sikumba highlighted the New Dawn Government’s strategic vision under President Hakainde Hichilema to foster a healthier, more productive population through physical activities. “A healthy nation is a thriving nation,” he emphasized, noting the significance of the marathon in combating rising cases of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and stroke.

The Minister also spotlighted the broader implications of the marathon on the nation’s tourism industry. “The KK Day Marathon has the potential to evolve into a premier tourism asset, attracting local and international participants Within Lusaka, 16th April 2025 stimulating economic activity,” he said. “Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, and volunteers all benefit from the marathon’s ripple effect.”

Professional Insurance, represented by Ms. Yvonne Majata, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to national wellness and unity. “This event embodies the values of our founding father, Dr. Kaunda—unity, health, and patriotism. We’re proud to support a cause that echoes his legacy,” she said.

Zambia Athletics Association President Major Bernard Bwalya lauded the event as a cornerstone for sports tourism and called on more stakeholders to join in supporting this national initiative. Meanwhile, Lusaka Fitness Squad representative Ms. Choolwe Changula described the marathon as “a national moment of reflection,” emphasizing its significance beyond athleticism—symbolizing collective progress and remembrance.

Held annually on April 28th—Kenneth Kaunda’s birthday—the marathon continues to grow in prominence. It remains a unifying force and a celebration of endurance, community, and patriotism, bringing together runners from across Zambia and beyond.
