LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL DISBURSES K72 MILLION UNDER CASH FOR WORK PROGRAMME

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has successfully disbursed a total of K72 million to beneficiaries of the Cash for Work Programme since its launch in August 2024.This initiative, aimed at providing temporary employment and financial relief to vulnerable communities, has so far benefited 118,821 individuals across the city’s seven constituencies. The programme has played a critical role in offering much-needed economic support to households affected by the 2023/2024 drought, aligning with the government’s broader efforts to mitigate economic hardships.

Beneficiaries of the programme receive K60 per day for 10 days per month in exchange for participating in public works projects, which contribute to maintaining and improving public spaces and infrastructure. LCC has ensured equitable distribution of funds across all constituencies, with payments reaching the following number of beneficiaries:

Chawama: 15,539 beneficiaries

Kabwata: 14,000 beneficiaries

Kanyama: 21,457 beneficiaries

Lusaka Central: 5,616 beneficiaries

Mandevu: 25,295 beneficiaries

Matero: 20,991 beneficiaries

Munali: 15,923 beneficiaries

To sustain the programme’s impact, the government has allocated additional funding for January 2025, ensuring the continuation of employment opportunities for vulnerable individuals. This funding will enable more residents to earn an income while contributing to essential community development initiatives. The Lusaka City Council remains committed to the transparent and efficient management of the Cash for Work Programme, ensuring that those in need continue to benefit from this initiative.

Under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, the programme reflects the New Dawn Government’s dedication to economic empowerment and social support for disadvantaged communities. The Cash for Work Programme not only provides immediate financial relief but also fosters a sense of community participation and resilience, reinforcing the government’s vision for inclusive economic growth and sustainable livelihoods.
