Lusaka, Zambia.
In a strong appeal to the nation, the Ministry of Education has urged collective action to combat the growing crisis of defilement against young girls in Zambia.
Speaking at the commissioning of a newly constructed 1×3 classroom block in Naluama Chiefdom, Chikankata District, Acting Permanent Secretary for Administration, Mr. Wisdom Bwalya, condemned the alarming rise in such cases and called for stringent measures against perpetrators.
Mr. Bwalya emphasized that defilement is a grave offense that undermines the safety and dignity of children, urging community leaders, parents, and educators to be at the forefront of safeguarding young girls. He stressed the need for proactive engagement, open dialogue, and breaking cultural barriers that may hinder the fight against this heinous crime.
“The government calls upon Royal Highnesses, parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant and take decisive steps to protect our children. It is crucial that we encourage open conversations with our children and empower them to speak out against any signs of predatory behavior,” Mr. Bwalya stated.
The event, which marked a significant milestone in the advancement of local education, was made possible by the Kafue Gorge Lower Power Development Corporation Limited (KGL). Mr. Bwalya commended KGL for its commitment to improving educational facilities, highlighting that investments in infrastructure play a crucial role in creating a conducive learning environment and fostering community growth.
“Educational infrastructure development is more than just providing classrooms; it is about empowering communities and ensuring children have safe spaces to learn and grow,” he added.
The newly constructed classroom block at Kasengo Primary School, an institution dating back to the 1920s, addresses longstanding challenges of inadequate facilities. In addition to the classrooms, the project includes desks, electricity connectivity, and the rehabilitation of five teachers’ houses, further enhancing the living conditions for educators in rural areas.
As the nation grapples with the rising threat of child defilement, the Ministry of Education remains steadfast in its call for collective responsibility, urging all stakeholders to unite in safeguarding the future of Zambia’s children through education, awareness, and decisive action.
