Harare, Zimbabwe.
In a forward-looking initiative to align national sports infrastructure with sustainable energy solutions, Zambia’s Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts is exploring a strategic partnership with FLYT Power Energy, a prominent Chinese solar technology firm.
The Ministry’s delegation, currently on a technical visit to Harare at the invitation of FLYT Power Energy, has been evaluating the company’s renewable energy capabilities—particularly its successful solar electrification of a mining facility in Zimbabwe. The visit forms part of the Ministry’s broader agenda to incorporate green technologies into public infrastructure projects.
Following these assessments, discussions are underway to equip Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola and National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka with solar energy systems. A feasibility study is already being planned at the National Heroes Stadium—currently undergoing renovation—to evaluate the integration of photovoltaic power into its energy framework.
Preliminary estimates suggest the proposed installations could generate up to 5 Megawatts of electricity, significantly improving energy efficiency and potentially feeding surplus power into the national grid.
“This initiative represents more than just cost savings,” said Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu. “It’s a strategic investment in resilient infrastructure, energy security, and our long-term commitment to sustainability.”
The initiative underscores Zambia’s growing focus on green innovation across sectors, with sports facilities poised to become flagship examples of environmentally responsible development.
