President Hakainde Hichilema this morning joined dignitaries, political leaders, and citizens at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross to pay his final respects to the late Edith Zewelani Nawakwi, former Cabinet Minister and President of the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD).

Speaking on behalf of the government and the people of Zambia, President Hichilema honoured Madam Nawakwi’s legacy as a trailblazing public servant and political leader who played a significant role in Zambia’s democratic journey.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to Madam Nawakwi for her service to this nation. She served with distinction in various capacities, including as a Cabinet Minister and later as an opposition leader,” President Hichilema said. “Her contributions were not only significant but also helped shape the political landscape of our country.”

The President reflected on their shared history, recalling the time both leaders worked together under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a coalition of opposition parties that sought to unify voices in pursuit of democratic governance.

Beyond the tribute, President Hichilema used the solemn occasion to emphasize the value of dialogue and mutual respect in the country’s political discourse. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering unity and collaboration across party lines.

“Political competition should never be a source of division or hostility,” he stated. “It must remain a contest of ideas—a competition to serve the people better, not to diminish one another. Our government remains open to dialogue as a pathway to resolving differences and building consensus.”

The President also called on the nation to approach the period of mourning with compassion and dignity, urging Zambians to support the Nawakwi family during this time of grief.

“As we mourn our departed sister, let us do so with honour. We each carry a responsibility to lessen the family’s burden by showing empathy, respect, and solidarity,” he said.

Madam Nawakwi, remembered for breaking barriers as one of Zambia’s most prominent female politicians, leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication to public service, and a commitment to advancing democracy.

Her funeral brought together leaders from various political parties, civil society, and members of the public in a moment of national reflection and unity—echoing the values she championed during her life.
