Chikankata, Southern Province, Zambia.
A transformative rural development initiative inspired by South Korea’s globally acclaimed Saemaul Undong model is changing the face of Chikankata District, Southern Province, as the Zambian government commissions infrastructure projects worth K1.2 million.
Implemented through the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, the initiative is promoting a powerful blend of self-help, collective responsibility, and mindset transformation among rural communities. The newly commissioned facilities include a 1×3 housing unit for health workers in Nanduba Village and three solar-powered water points in Nansenga Village, while a community hall and market shelter are nearing completion.
Presiding over the commissioning ceremony, Permanent Secretary Ms. Angela Kawandami, accompanied by Southern Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Namani Monze, underscored the importance of community-driven development in advancing national goals.
“The Saemaul Undong approach amplifies the impact of national programmes like the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and Cash-for-Work. It empowers communities to take charge of their development through innovation, discipline, and hard work,” said Ms. Kawandami.
She praised the enduring support of the South Korean government and highlighted the practical impact the projects are already having on local livelihoods. Beyond infrastructure, the partnership is also equipping people with knowledge—31 community members and 32 government officers have already been trained in South Korea, with another 20 participants set to depart for the next round of training.
Dr. Monze expressed pride in the community’s ownership of the development agenda, calling the initiative a model of what can be achieved when government and citizens work in harmony.
“This is not just aid—it’s a partnership for progress. The Saemaul Undong model has breathed new life into rural development through the spirit of sacrifice and collaboration,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chikankata District Commissioner Mr. Timothy Chipolyonga commended the initiative and urged residents to safeguard the new infrastructure to ensure its long-term impact.
With a track record of lifting millions out of poverty in Korea and now finding fertile ground in Zambia, the Saemaul Undong philosophy is proving that rural transformation is possible when people lead their own development—with a little help from committed partners.
