LUSAKA, Zambia – September 4, 2025 – The State has filed an application to seize multimillion-dollar assets belonging to former Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji, a day after his conviction on charges of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.
The National Prosecution Authority (NPA), in its application before the Lusaka Subordinate Court, is seeking the forfeiture of:
- A Bell 430 Helicopter
- A Bell 206 Jet Ranger Helicopter
- Three luxury homes located in Silverest Gardens
- USD 215,000 in cash
These assets were all cited as proceeds of crime, following Malanji’s conviction on seven counts under the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010.
The application is backed by an affidavit from Mukelebai Kwaleyela, Director of the Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit (AMLIU) at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).
According to the NPA, the move underscores the State’s determination to ensure that individuals convicted of financial and corruption-related crimes do not benefit from illicitly acquired wealth.
A court hearing on the forfeiture application is expected in the coming days.
