Zambia’s tourism sector must embrace eco-tourism as a driving force for sustainable development, says Permanent Secretary for Tourism, Mr. Evans Muhanga.

Addressing industry stakeholders, he underscored the urgent need to integrate environmental stewardship into tourism practices to safeguard Zambia’s natural heritage while fostering economic empowerment.

Mr. Muhanga highlighted the global shift towards sustainable travel, stressing that Zambia must align with this trend to maintain its competitiveness. “Eco-tourism is not just an option; it is a necessity for the future of our industry. By adopting responsible tourism practices, we protect our ecosystems, create jobs, and enhance the visitor experience,” he stated.

He pointed out that eco-tourism directly supports Zambia’s Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in environmental conservation, poverty reduction, and community development. He urged tourism operators, hospitality providers, and local enterprises to implement eco-friendly initiatives and support conservation-driven tourism models.

Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment, Mr. Muhanga assured stakeholders of continued support through policy development, capacity-building programs, and strategic partnerships. He also called on travelers to choose sustainable tourism options that contribute to preserving Zambia’s landscapes and wildlife for future generations.

With eco-tourism gaining global momentum, Zambia’s proactive approach could position it as a leading destination for responsible travel in Africa.
