UK STRENGTHENS TIES WITH ZAMBIA, SUPPORT AGRICULTURAL GROWTH AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zambia’s agricultural transformation and climate resilience efforts, recognizing the country’s strides in policy reforms and sustainable farming initiatives.

During a courtesy call on Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Reuben Mtolo, British High Commissioner to Zambia, Her Excellency Rebecca Terzeon, praised Zambia’s progress in modernizing agriculture, particularly the success of the E-voucher system. She noted that such advancements position Zambia as a potential regional leader in food production and economic growth.

“agricultural reforms being implemented are crucial for Zambia’s food security and economic sustainability,” said High Commissioner Terzeon. “The UK is committed to deepening collaboration with Zambia to drive agricultural innovation and enhance climate resilience.”

Emphasizing the strong correlation between sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation, High Commissioner Terzeon pledged the UK’s continued support in Zambia’s climate change mitigation strategies. She underscored the importance of leveraging technology and modern farming techniques to enhance productivity while protecting natural resources.

Minister Mtolo welcomed the UK’s commitment and stressed the importance of policy consistency and strategic partnerships in achieving long-term agricultural growth.

“Zambia values the UK’s support in strengthening our agricultural sector. We aim to build a resilient and productive industry that ensures food security and contributes significantly to economic development,” he stated.

He outlined Zambia’s ambitious agricultural targets, as set by President Hakainde Hichilema, which include achieving 10 million metric tonnes of maize, 1 million metric tonnes of soya beans, and 1 million metric tonnes of wheat annually by 2027. Additionally, he highlighted the Presidential Irrigation Initiative as a key driver in enhancing agricultural production and sustainability.

The meeting reaffirmed the growing bilateral cooperation between Zambia and the UK, with both governments committed to fostering agricultural modernization, food security, and climate adaptation strategies. The UK’s continued engagement in Zambia’s agricultural sector signals a shared vision for sustainable development and economic resilience.
