Lusaka, Zambia.
In light of public concerns regarding ambulance shortages, the University Teaching Hospitals (UTHs) have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring uninterrupted emergency transport for pediatric patients. As part of a comprehensive healthcare network, the UTH Children’s Hospital collaborates closely with other specialized units to optimize ambulance availability and ensure critical cases receive timely intervention.
Given the vital role of ambulances in emergency medical care, UTHs have implemented contingency measures, including the use of alternative vehicles when necessary, to maintain rapid response capabilities. These efforts align with the New Dawn Government broader national initiatives aimed at strengthening emergency medical services across Zambia.
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has recently bolstered the country’s ambulance fleet, receiving 47 new ambulances, with an additional 18 expected by the end of the month. By May 2025, the nationwide deployment of 156 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) ambulances will mark a significant milestone in expanding emergency healthcare access. Additionally, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), is finalizing the procurement of 60 more ambulances to ease the pressure on existing resources.
While challenges persist, these strategic interventions underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery and ensuring that all Zambians have access to reliable emergency medical services. The UTHs remain dedicated to prioritizing patient welfare and addressing logistical hurdles with urgency and efficiency.
