Chilanga, Lusaka Province, Zambia.
In a pivotal move to accelerate Zambia’s quest for a billion-dollar beef export industry, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, under the leadership of Hon. Peter Kapala, has officially handed over the site for a new solar energy installation to China Jiangsu International Green Energy Limited.
The project, located at the Central Veterinary Research Institute (CVRI), underscores the government’s steadfast commitment to advancing the livestock sector through sustainable energy solutions.
The solar power facility, comprising 356 panels and a robust 200-kilowatt capacity supported by a commercial-grade three-phase system and four 50-kilowatt inverters, will primarily energize the laboratory division of CVRI. This upgrade is poised to significantly enhance the institute’s operational efficiency, ensuring faster processing of veterinary diagnostics and livestock health assessments — critical elements in maintaining Zambia’s competitive edge in global beef markets.
Valued at 7.7 million Kwacha, the project is slated for completion within one month, following an initial mobilization period. Mr. Bill Yi, Managing Director of China Jiangsu International Green Energy Limited, affirmed that all requisite equipment is already in-country, guaranteeing a swift installation timeline.
This solar initiative is a cornerstone of the New Dawn Government and President Hakainde Hichilema’s broader strategy to position Zambia as a leading exporter of beef, with an ambitious target of generating over US$1 billion annually. Achieving this vision necessitates not only enhanced energy infrastructure but also robust animal health systems and strict adherence to international standards.
The site handover ceremony drew the attendance of several senior government officials, reflecting the Ministry’s collaborative approach to sectoral development. Among them were Mr. Evans Mutanuka, Director of Fisheries; Mr. Alikadio Maseko, Principal Research Scientist; and Mr. George Dautu, Chief Veterinary Research Officer. Their presence underscored a united front in driving Zambia’s livestock sector toward global competitiveness.
This project marks more than just an infrastructure upgrade — it signals a transformative step in harnessing green energy to fuel Zambia’s livestock ambitions, ensuring sustainable growth and economic resilience for years to come.
