Zambia and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic and diplomatic relations, with a focus on expanding trade and investment opportunities between the two nations. Canada has recognized Zambia as one of Africa’s premier investment destinations, citing its political stability, strong governance structures, and vast economic potential.

This commitment was reinforced during a high-level bilateral meeting between Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., MP, and Canada’s Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Rob Oliphant. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) meeting in London, where both officials explored avenues for enhanced collaboration.

Canada has identified Zambia’s mining and agro-processing sectors as key areas of interest, aligning with Zambia’s broader economic growth strategy. Hon. Oliphant emphasized Canada’s commitment to investing in stable economies with conducive business environments. He highlighted Canada’s recent establishment of a one-stop Africa trade hub, an initiative designed to facilitate seamless trade engagements between Canadian companies and African markets.

To further enhance economic ties, Hon. Oliphant proposed organizing a Canadian trade mission to Zambia, providing Canadian investors with direct exposure to Zambia’s vast business opportunities. He also encouraged Zambia to reciprocate with a trade delegation to Canada, allowing Zambian businesses and government representatives to explore the Canadian market and foster new investment partnerships.

Hon. Haimbe welcomed Canada’s growing interest in Zambia and reaffirmed the country’s dedication to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships. He underscored Zambia’s proactive efforts to attract foreign investment, particularly in the mining sector. A key initiative in this regard is Zambia’s newly launched high-resolution, countrywide geophysical survey aimed at identifying mineral-rich regions and accelerating targeted investment in mineral exploration.

The Minister reassured Canada of Zambia’s commitment to maintaining an investor-friendly climate, characterized by transparent regulatory policies and a stable business environment. He emphasized that the government remains focused on strengthening international partnerships that drive sustainable economic growth and job creation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reiterated its commitment to fostering deeper economic ties with Canada and other global partners. The proposed trade missions and investment collaborations signal a new era of strengthened diplomatic and economic engagement, positioning Zambia as a hub for international investment in Africa.

By leveraging Canada’s expertise and investment interest, Zambia aims to unlock new opportunities that will contribute to long-term economic prosperity and solidify its role as a key player in the regional and global economy.
